Would anyone be interested in something like this? The idea would be to select a poem (or a prose text) every week or every other week, read it and discuss it in this thread. I think it would lead to a better understanding of Anglo-Saxon culture, and hopefully to a greater appreciation of these texts purely as literary works, too. Those who know some Old English could also comment on features of the original language and stylistic devices used by the authors which are lost in the translation.
Anyone up for it?

This sounds like a great idea! But it's sad that I'd love to participate in such a thing, but I don't know Old English. I have my book, but whether or not it'd ever be enough for me to learn and get by I will never know. Plus, I don't have the time to pursue this properly as I'd like.

Ah, don't worry, of course the reading material would be translations into Modern English.

Awesome! Let's wait a bit more to see if anyone else feels like joining, and then we can start getting organized.

I'd love to take part in such a reading circle. Though my rare spare time would likely lead to me being a rather silent member at times...

Yes I would like to participate aswell, sounds like a great idea. Using the Old English and the modern versions would be good because the ones of us here who don't know alot about Old English (like me)could gain some understanding for it.

Great! So, how do you guys think we should run this? One text per week? One every two weeks? Anything else? And on what day of the week would you prefer to set the 'deadline' to start the discussion on a given text? Ic híer háman and náwiht elles. Where are your crickets now, huh?

Suppose the two week term is more comfortable for me, but would try to read the texts in one week too. The deadline day does not matter to me, as every day of the week is equally full of work for me.

Actually it would be best for me to start the discussions on Friday afternoons but it's up to you guys ,if you have time then.

Yes, I think Fridays could work. Anyone has a different idea?

Well, if no one disagrees, I'd suggest a schedule like this:
Week 1 Monday: text announced (bear in mind they'll be rather short) Friday-Sundary: discussion of the text
Week 2 Monday-Sunday: discussion of the text
Would you guys prefer to have more time to read the texts and less to discuss them? Any other changes you'd suggest?

Since no one raised any objections, I suppose we'll go with the above schedule. Which means tomorrow I'll announce the text, post links to a translation or two, and hope for the best.
