Déore fréondas, wesaþ gé hále! Behold the ancient heirloom of the Fyrning dynasty: the helm of Angorold: (larger version & download)In the frozen days of winter there is little to do for us except sit together in Stéda and tell stories to eachother. It is of such stories our lord Éadríc and I spoke as we sat together, as I hearkened to a legend of the Helm of Angorold, a gilded helmet whose descent is as proud and far-reaching as Éadrícs own. It was given unto him by his father Éadréd and he got it from his father before him, all the way throughout the ages. As I sat listening, he shewed it to me, making me marvel as so many enemies and friends had before me. It is not often taken out but in dire times, and never has a fiendish blow struck it's crest, for our charitable chiefs are rich in loyal thanes. Maybe some of you, amongst the old guard, have already seen our captain wear it on the field of victory. Such a masterpiece could only have been the work of a famed craftsman of old, such as weaponsmith Árbæd, I thought, and I set my own humble skills about painting it's image to share with you. May it forever rejoice our kinsmen with its gleam in dark hours, and may our enemies be filled with the mighty fear of Fyrnas holy Spirit by beholding it! Wesaþ þé mid God

That is indeed splendid! The gleam of well-polished metal is superbly done. Aquarelle is an unforgiving technique, but you've pulled it off remarkably.

You have bestowed upon us a thing of great marvel and beauty with this skillfully wrought likeness of Angoroldes láf. We are in your debt, Æþela mín déora mǽg!
High be the Helm of Angorold!

Gosh, I sincerely hope Eadric doesn't wear it in battle! Imagine if it were damaged or lost! It should be kept safely in the hall's vaults, that it may be brought out for bragging rights during feasts! :þ
(But I have seen him wear ancient helmets before...)
Great job! I only just noticed the horse-head ornament above the eyebrows. It's awesome.

Thanks a lot! Rædmund, watercolour is indeed very hard. I had more than one failed draft before this one! It's a thankful medium for metallic shine though. Hroða, our job as good thanes is to keep the enemies from getting close to our Wísa! No sword should ever be in an arms length of him! (But of course Eadríc is a capable enough warrior to fend for himself. He just has to take care for teamhits ) The Fyrnings have many loyal thanes, that's why it isn't battered like some uncharitable chieftain. Þrýða, the horse makes it indeed very rohirric (counts for the entire clan ). The design is however based on a real Anglosaxon helmet. Eadríc and I decided to have something really minimalistic and to do away with all the ornaments except the horsey and the mask. Do you guys like the garnet in the mask? And the background?

I can only say that I like everything about the helmet.

Do you guys like the garnet in the mask? And the background? The garnet is fine, and the thin gold threading on it had to be quite a challenge. Now that you've mentioned it, I'm not a huge fan of the background's colour or texture. I think a simple grey or tan background would have worked better - that's just nitpicking though, it hardly distracts from the helm's awesomeness.

Thanks, Hróþgár & Rædmund.
You're probably right about the background, I see what you mean. It looks a bit shriekish. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!
