This is my first and by now only attempt at drawing a fully armoured, battle-ready member of the House of Fyrna. I used a photo of myself as model to get the anatomy right (The head is not mine and perhaps a tiny little bit too big). Therefore the man ended up being rather slender. Many parts of the picture were drawn individually on single paper sheets. Thus I have traced each one of them by using a window (which requires a really uncomfortable work posture) to get them all together in one picture. This is the reason why the lines are so shaky. Originally it was drawn by pencil, but afterwards I edited it digitally a little bit to make it more visible. The stitches of the shield rim are missing, because I was too exhausted to draw them after drawing all these tiny chainmail rings and it is still intended to be just a sketch after all. Drawing faces is terrible by the way. However, please tell me what you think about it, especially if you detest it for some reason.

Good Fróda, there is nothing to detest here, as this is indeed a really great and lively sketch. The criticism that was called for: I'd suggest to work on the symetry of the eyes a bit to make him look bolder. And the sleeves of the tunic might benefit from some ripples or whatnot.

Looks very good for a first try! And it's nice to see you taking up the challenge. Drawing all those rings must have been a nightmare.
Some critique:
Even with a smaller head he would look very slender. His waist also seems too high. And the sleeves could use some creases to breath some more life into it. Similarly, perhaps it would be better to make it a bit more sketchy instead of having neat lines. But I suppose that might rather be a matter of taste.
The face looks quite good, I find, and the details with the leather strap and belt are very nice. All in all it looks much better than I could ever manage.

The hauberk looks amazing! Same for all the other details, like the belt.
Some parts look like you put less work into them and are a bit undetailed by comparison, like the sleeves and the hands (the position of his right hand is a bit awkward).
But the parts that are more detailed really shine through. His neck, for example, I find very well done. Same goes for the helmet. I'd love to see more of your stuff!

First of all I wish to thank each one of you for his feedback and appreciation. I'd suggest to work on the symetry of the eyes a bit to make him look bolder. And the sleeves of the tunic might benefit from some ripples or whatnot. Indeed, I definitely screwed up the eyes. I tried to improve them, but the irises are just so unbelievably tiny (The original picture is even smaller than the uploaded one. It is only about 18cm high). Creases are a good idea and I added some. Still they look to random though. Even with a smaller head he would look very slender. His waist also seems too high. And the sleeves could use some creases to breath some more life into it. Similarly, perhaps it would be better to make it a bit more sketchy instead of having neat lines. But I suppose that might rather be a matter of taste. In this version the man’s upper body is a bit broader and his waist lower, as you suggested, and I think it looks better now. Perhaps I have drawn the belt still too high, but I would like to indicate that it is worn at the waist and not the hip, since it is supposed to keep a hauberk in position and not trousers. For now I better stick to neat lines, because it is easier to work with them, especially regarding details like the buckles etc. However this can always be changed for the final product. For now this still is just a sketch. All in all it looks much better than I could ever manage. Actually I can not draw very well myself. I am sure you could get similar results when tracing a photo, like I did. It is much easier than drawing something just from your mind. Some parts look like you put less work into them and are a bit undetailed by comparison, like the sleeves and the hands (the position of his right hand is a bit awkward). You are right, the way he holds the axe is pretty weird. Though I guess the reason is less his hand but the position of the axe, which I have drawn after drawing the hand. After shifting the axe a bit it looks much more believable now, I think. Drawing all those rings must have been a nightmare. Actually it does not take that long when you just quickly scribble them like I did. At first it is even a bit like painting mandalas or doing other meditating stuff but after a while it just gets annoying and tiresome. After I have tried to implement your suggestions I ended up with this sketchy sketch of my initial sketch (thus less detail). In addition to your improvements I turned the axe a bit and shifted the sword more to the side.

Looks much better! Any criticism I could offer at this point would be just nitpicking. Well done!

I like the drawings and also how you changed the details for N° 2 - the right hand looks now way better and the face is also improved a lot.So now i am curious on the N° 3 where all details from the first and the improved version come together.

Ah nice drawing, indeed very nice for your first attempt. But maybe you could give him another helm type? The one shown is a mid 11. ct. version and I would love to see any 10. ct. nasal (spangen) helmet here. But that's no real critique ;-)!

(Pssst! It should be Sketch of an armoured Fyrning, without the -a. )

At last! I have finally managed to draw the final version of the sketch. Unfortunately my scanner is not very brightness sensitive. Thus the image is much fainter than the original drawing (Except for the chainmail I actually had to redraw every line to make it even remotely visible). Editing it digitally might help a bit though. Wilfriþ, your hoard of magnificence is absolutely impressive. You are most likely one of the best equipped reenactors there have ever been. I am certain that many of your pictures will come in handy when I bring myself to attempt another drawing. By the way, I am really glad you are still with us Fyrningas.

Lovely work, Fróda!
It'll be easy to get it a bit darker, don't worry. I can try it for you once I get back to my own computer.
Have you thought of a name for this particularly well-moustached Fyrning?

Ah, pity about the chainmail. It must have been such a pain to have to redraw it from scratch, haha. I'd recommend fooling around with your scanner and your Photoshop settings until you're happy with the result.
Interesting that you replaced his nasal helmet with a Spangenhelm. The Spangenhelm is more beautiful, but the nasal helmet would be more accurate I think.
